Actually, there is only one Christian church, which is called the Body of Christ. But, there are many parts each having their own unique personality and function (1 Cor 12:20). Christ, himself, contextually referred to 7 congregations in Asia Minor as “churches” (Rev 1:20). American churches are subdivided by denominations, and they are like-wise subdivided by districts. Some Christian congregations have no ties to a denominational structure and are called independent churches.
